The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
