Everyone is Encouraged to Become the Extra Haim Bandmate.

"When are you interviewing the band?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous admirers have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

However the band will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
