At Least 6 Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Event
No fewer than six people have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" incident seems to have been caused by "a sudden rush of candidates who overcame security measures and stormed the entrances," stated a release from Ghana's armed forces.
22 additional individuals were injured, including 5 who remain in critical condition.
Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, the capital, with the hope of enlisting in the military.
Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and frequently result in disorderly situations.
The deadline to apply for this recruitment was prolonged for a week to allow for more applicants, as some had experienced difficulties in the process.
Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President President John Mahama has visited the wounded in hospital.
Calm has been restored, and the enlistment process has since started.
